Sydni Sara Simone is a mixed media artist based in Chicago, Illinois, whose work explores the complexities of race, identity, and community. Since 2020, her art has been distinguished by its rich textures, vibrant color palettes, and the use of gold leaf, all of which evoke a sense of both presence and transformation.
In her practice, Sydni delves into the emotional landscapes shaped by her experiences as a Black woman, reflecting on themes of belonging, isolation, nostalgia, grief, and mental health. Her work serves as both a personal and collective narrative, inviting viewers to engage with the nuanced realities of being misunderstood and disconnected. Through her art, Sydni seeks to create a space for healing and understanding.
Sydni earned her BA in Creative Writing from Columbia College Chicago in 2022, and her work has been showcased at The Center Galleries. She continues to create and exhibit work that invites dialogue, connection, and reflection.
My art serves as a reflection of my healing journey as I move through life, battle with mental health struggles and grief, and grabble with balancing the negative emotions with the positive. Through vibrant colors, I aim to elicit hope and peace, while intertwining shapes and textures to evoke emotions from nostalgia to grief and isolation.
In striving for balance amidst these contrasting feelings, I utilize a mix of media, including metal leaf, to entrance the viewer. Central to my work are spirals, subtly integrated into my works as symbols of life's perpetual cycle—a reminder to embrace its continuity rather than fear it.
My main objective is to provide a space for viewers to perceive life from a greater scope. In essence, my art celebrates black culture and the exploration of identity, and extends an invitation for others to join in a collective journey of healing and growth.
